One Unusually Chilly Morning

As the sky began to brighten along the eastern horizon, the traveller on the wing reflected that it had been at least a productive night as far as the weather was concerned. The freezing air had enlivened him, his scales shimmering brightly as a frost of his own production sleeted over him, summoned as it was on the previous evening. He had slept away nearly three days over the previous week, he was now ready to spend another few days either watching the city of the bipeds, or hatching mischief.

Pushing the temperatures down was pleasant enough, but he'd done all he could on that count for now. He banked low over Rhydin, at first just filing away what he saw as a kind of sociological study, but then a burst of warm air from one of the buildings below carried a scent he was familiar with.

And so it was that, before opening, the Divine Delights Bakery had it's first visitor of the day. The little white crystal dragon, Shiver, dropped into a landing and sauntered up to the door....

The young butter blond haired woman who stood at the Bakery's front counter looked in wide eyed dismay at the small white dragon approaching the front door. Her hands twisted her white canvas apron as she then turned to the doorway to the kitchen.

"Boss, I think there's someone here to see you," Melanie Wyndham nervously said. "There's a white dragon outside." She barely resisted the strong urge to flee into the safety of the kitchen, and waited for her Boss' answer to the situation.

Shiver was vaguely familiar with Mellie's scent, but there were others far more welcome. For instance - chocolate!

He sauntered over to the front door, behind which he could see Melanie. He glared, not quite at her so much as at the door. He wondered how much frost it would take to shatter it.

Ariana MacGyldren glanced up from her work of intricately braiding a cinnamon almond raisin strudel ring with Melly's nervous statement. "Wot?" She brushed her flour dusted green skinned hands off on her white canvas apron, and bustled out of the kitchen to see what was what.

Her emerald green eyes widened in delighted surprise when she caught sight of the familiar white dragon outside of her bakery. Gods above and below.

"Let him in, Melly! He's a friend of mine."

Ariana chuckled to herself as the petite butter blond woman hurried to comply with her Boss' orders. Then she spoke in the throat-roughening Draconic tongue, >Greetings, Aussirmollikorth. My heart is gladdened to welcome you once again. I am at your service here. Wot do you wish of me?<

It was a perfectly sensible question, but suddenly Shiver found himself at a bit of a loss for an answer. How can one share companionship without asking for a companion? How does one explain the faint and fading scars of awful fire without boasting of how it was endured? How does one brag about having slipped from the skies of a monkey-flown metal bird without admitting the need to brag?

It had been one hell of a week, but even Shiver had his limits. One of these was loquacity. He would never speak his whole mind, so he answered in the mammal tongue with a single word that had no draconic equivalent. "Chocolate!"

Honestly, what could be more obvious?
